Resumo: This thesis analyzes thirteen novels, written between 1897 and 2013, which expressly mentioned Porto Alegre as a reference space, not episodic or replaceable, to map and list the most prominent elements of the landscape/townscape. The novels, representative of the formation of the imaginary of the city, contribute to the cultural repertoire in the southern capital. The geography of literature deepens the theme, focusing on three major topics: cartography, landscapes/townscapes and horizons. Some constituent aspects of these topics, geographies, referentialities, experiences, urbanities, narratives and virtualities are explored for conducting the research on space in literature. The experience of urbanity determines how the pensée-paysage emerges as an aesthetic act. The exploration of horizons results in the transformation of the observation that elucidates the city. We understand the subject in his narrative experience as an essential element in the understanding of this gaze at the city.
