Resumo: |
Introduction: Prematurity is considered a relevant and worrisome public health issue. The benefits of human milk for premature newborns during the hospitalization period and after hospital discharge have already been recognized. Several factors may be involved in the success or failure of breastfeeding, and such knowledge may have great relevance in planning interventions. Objective: To identify variables with intervention potential associated with the volume of milk expressed by mothers of preterm infants. Methods: A prospective, descriptive, and exploratory cohort study with a quantitative approach, conducted at Hospital Materno Infantil Presidente Vargas de Porto Alegre - RS. For data collection, a form of sociodemographic information about mothers and outcome variables was applied. The sample consisted of 20 mothers of preterm newborns. Results: They refer to a sample of 20 mothers of newborns. A four times median was found regarding the number of times milk expression was performed by mothers at the hospital and home per day. As for the expression method, most of the mothers, 60.0% (n=12), reported using two methods, manual and pump. A total of 25.0% (n=9) of the participants applied the manual method only, whereas 15.0% (n=3) applied only the pump. Conclusions: The study identified that the volume of expressed milk was lower than expected by the Ministry of Health. We highlight the lack of milk bank demand, breast-related problems as the method used for expression, and the unfavorable socioeconomic conditions of mothers. |
