Resumo: This thesis intends to identify the theoretical connections between professional formation and military discourses in Brazil during the nineteenth century, from an analysis of the Army officers thought, particulararly of the representatives of Engineers Corps. Until 1850, when the Minister of War, Manoel Felizardo de Souza Mello, changed the mechanisms for promotion of officers, military academic formation was no requirement to move up the professional military forces. On the other hand, the Military Academy, since its creation in 1810, was responsible for instruct the scientific corps of the Army: the gunners and engineers. Is analyzed the conditions for the creation of the Military School in order to illustrate their curriculum influenced by Portuguese Enlightenment. Linked with the study of this institution, is the research result of documents related to the military that it was formed, as well as those responsible for its maintenance. Are analyzed the speeches of graduates of the Military School, represented for different discourses forms.
