INTRODUCTION : The Joint Hipermobility (JH) is a musculoesqueletic alteration that initiates in the infancy and it can follow the individual during all his/her life. Nowadays, health professionals are concerned to the aging of the world population, mainly investigating the events that occur to the ones with 60 years old on. Among these events, there is the JH that is the subject of this research.OBJECTIVES : This study aim was to research the occurrence of JH in elderly subjects from Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul. Besides, the profile of the elderly population in relation to age, gender and corporal mass index were identified. It was also analyzed the association among the JH prevalence and the physical activity index and the analysis of the association between the JH prevalence and the balance of elderly, in a sample of elderly people from Porto Alegre.METHODS : This research had a transversal study in a sample of population base. All the participants had filled a Free and Knowledge Will Form. Besides, they had had their height measured by a estadiometer, weighed in digital scale, having the corporal weight and the fat mass evaluated by the same instrument, through the method of electronic bioimpedancy. After that, a photographic record of the joint hipermobility evaluation of the elderly was realized in the elderly, according to the criteria of Beighton and Horan. The Index of Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) was applied to evaluate the physical activity index of the sample and two tests of balance, the Test Up Go (TUG) and the Test of Functional Reach.RESULTS : The results showed that the prevalence of the JH in the elderly studied was of 10.4%, being 13.4% were female and only 2.3% were male. It was observed in this study that there is a linear trend in the increasing of the JH prevalence proportional to the increase of the family income. The average in the balance tests were a little higher in the elderly with JH, but with no statistics relevance. The result pointed out that the elderly with JH present less corporal mass index. In relation to falling risks, according to TUG test, most of the eldery studied presented a low risk of falls. This results are different to the ones from the Test of Functional Reach, where most of the elderly presented high or intermediate risk.CONCLUSION : This research pointed out some new briefings in relation to the elderly health. The study aims to assist the professionals who work with the phenomenon of the human aging to understand and to question the results presented here. All studies must generate questions for new studies and thus successively the search for the knowledge on the complexity of the human body can become endless and instigating. |
