Resumo: This thesis deals with a research on how babies are symbolically activated in social networks. The general objective of the study is to identify and understand which symbolic images of babies are disseminated in the Instagram profiles most watched by Brazilian mothers, according to the Globo Gente platform, belonging to Grupo Globo. The concept used to analyze the symbolic images is that of an archetypal compass based on biophysiological axes, according to Durand (1993, 2012). The look on babies is situated according to the guidelines of the Sociology of Childhood (SIROTA, 2001, 2007, 2012; PLAISANCE, 2004). Based on this, a historical review and of the fields of knowledge are elaborated on the conceptions of what newborns are socially, seeking to understand how affectations occur between social networks and people in everyday life (LEFEBVRE, 1958, 1981, 1991). The research methodology applied in the empirical stage is Content Analysis (BARDIN, 2011), which guided the collection, classification and analysis of corpus data, obtained from three selected profiles (@flaviacalina; @amandacomenico; and @tiadani) . The study’s conclusions reveal the rescue of historic symbolic images, such as “funny baby”, “exhausting baby” and “angel baby”, which are re-signified according to the social and historical moment in which we are situated.
