This research proposes to analize the book Portugal e o Futuro: Análise da Conjuntura Nacional, written by the general and former governor of Guiné-Bissau António de Spínola. The publishing of Portugal e o Futuro (1974) establishes true chaos on the portuguese regime for dealing with taboo subjects, like war and the Empire. The book presents a sintesis of the theories that were being elaborated by the General since 1961, when contact with the angolan guerrilla made him first doubt about the viability of a stricly military victory. Throughout Portugal e o Futuro, Spínola analyzes the crisis that Portugal faced and argues that the only viable solution for the problem regarding the portuguese overseas territories were political. Facing this, Spínola proposes the construction of a federation that should progressively evolve into a large Luso-Afro- Brasilian community. For the author, Portugal was and could only be multiracial, multicultural, multicontinental and needed to urgently become multistate.
