The present thesis consists in a study of the Rio-Grandense Academy of Letters, reviewing its history and production, based on Itamar Even-Zohar s polysystem theory. The material hereby analysed is based on primary sources originated by the Academy itself and focuses on data about the institution s history, membership, and periodical journal, which has been in circulation since 1910. This study uses the selected corpus to highlight the way in which this association comprises a literary system that serves as foundation for a larger one: the rio-grandense literary system
