INTRODUCTION: Aging is defined as a physiological process connected to the passing of time, and thus resulting in biological, social and psychological changes, as well as in the individual s sexuality. Sexuality is a broad concept which involves a subjective universe. Sexuality involves the individual as a whole, and during the aging process it isn t extinguished, it only changes. However, one can see there s a myth towards sexuality in old age, which is only approached in areas such as health, family life or when the subject is addressed by the elderly themselves. Gerontology sees old people s sexuality as something natural rather then pathological. OBJECTIVE: Knowing elderly people s self-perception towards their own body, aging and sexuality. METHODOLOGY: Qualitative paradigm study of descriptive-interpretive type. The study comprises seven semi structured interviews with elderly people. Four of the interviewees belong to a peer group and the other three are from a theatrical group from the city of Novo Hamburgo, Rio Grande do Sul, all of them female. Data collected were analyzed and discussed together along with the data provided by a diary. METHODOLOGY: Qualitative paradigm study of descriptive-interpretive type. CONCLUSION: Sexuality is built and modified along the individual s life, having its particularities in each one of the living phases, being influenced by education, ways people relate to others, as well as his life story. The relation each individual establishes with his body, his education and the aging process have influence in sexuality. |
