Objective: This study aimed to verify the process of bone repair biomaterials forward the use of Bio-Oss ®, Osteogen ® and Bone Ceramic ® in an experimental model with defects created in rat femurs through histological analysis, evaluating also the rate of interleukin-1 (IL-1), interleukin-6 (IL-6) and TNF-α present in each inflammatory process existing in bone repair.Materials and Methods: 36 Wistar rats aged 8 weeks and about 300 grams underwent surgery femur bone defect creating a 5mm long and 3mm wide to get in medullary tissue. The animals were randomly divided into four groups: Group I - Bio-Oss ® (Geistlich Wolhusen Sons Ltd., Switzerland), Group II - Bone Ceramic ® (Straumann AG, Basel, Switzerland), Group III - Osteogen ® (Impladent Ltd., Hollywood, USA), Group Control - clot. As each group, the femur had their bone biomaterial filled by correspondent, except for the control group that had filled with blood clot. Thirty days after surgery, animals were euthanized and each operated femur removed, decalcified, cut with a microtome and blade made for microscopic histological analysis. Results: In thirty days, no significant difference in bone formation between the groups. However, as the rate of the marking of proinflammatory cytokines, Bio- Oss showed the lowest rate of TNF-α and in only two places a rate slightly. The same occurred with IL-1, but showing slight rate at six sites. Regarding IL-6, the rate was moderate to severe in most sites. The Bone Ceramic showed higher rate of TNF-α in relation to Bio-oss, maintained a balance in relation to IL-1 and similar to IL-6. And Osteogen showed the highest rate of TNF-α and IL-1 and lower IL-6 when compared to Bio-oss and Bone Ceramic. Conclusion: The clinical implications from a study in animal models are controversial, but within the scope of work, a biomaterial with low TNF-α and IL- 1 and moderate content of IL-6 appears to be mature in 30 days , i.e., with optimal histological conditions of bone formation |
