This work studies the history of the colection "Biblioteca do Espirito Moderno"(Modern Spirit Library) edited by Companhia Editora Nacional. It had four series (Philosophy, Sciences, History and Biography and Literature), and tried to put together a Library of civilization and culture aimed at the average Brazilian Reader . It was organized in two diferent times by the educator Anísio Teixera, this colection was one of the great non-didactical successes of "Companhia Editora Nacional" and had a fairly long longevity" The thesis investigates both editorial choices and the comparison between titles brought to Brazil by Companhia Editora Nacional and other colections ;present both in the national Market and in the English, French and US markets. Making use of international correspondency from the Historical archive of the publisher, the research revealed a series of conditions in the tittles negotiation as well as the titles selection process from a viewpoint focused on the everyday choices of the publishing house (not onlyof the editor), with all its hurdles: Exchange rate problems, deadlines, translator selection, negotiation with authors, publishers and literary agents, copyrights, graphic selections and Production and distribution costs |
