Resumo: This work investigated student participation in class councils. Its general objective was; understand the meanings of teachers and students about the presence and participation of students in the class council. The specific objectives were: a) to explain the meanings of teachers and students about student participation in class councils; b) recover the trajectory of the class council from the implementation to the present day; c) understand and explain how students participate in Class Council; d) to propose notes for the improvement in the organization of a class council based on the research findings. To understand the origins and the recent discussions about the collegiate, researches were carried out in the thesis and dissertation banks review of the specialized literature DALBEN, 1985,1985, 2005; SILVA, 2012; SOUZA, 2008; ROCHA.1982. The research was anchored in the perspective of Socio-Historical Psychology and supported by the works of Vygotsky, 2000, 2001, 2007, especially in the categories sense and meaning. The methodological path of the investigation involved interviews and questionnaires with teachers and students from a large state school in Greater São Paulo. The results pointed to the importance of student participation in the class council, as well as declaring the recognition of the importance of the class council as one of the privileged spaces of the school for the formation of the people who participate in it. In this sense appropriate to the dialogue and debate around better learning and improvements in the practice of teachers. For this reason, this study aimed to contribute to the production of information, reflections and knowledge that can broaden the educators' vision in the sense that the class council with the participation of students is a space where relationships are able to become more affective, forming and promoters of citizenship
