Resumo: |
The purpose of this dissertation is to investigate and analyze the conceptions and practice of three professors teaching mathematics in a first year course of Business Administration at the university level. Specifically three questions guided this study: which are the conceptions and practice of these professors about the proposed content for this discipline; what didactical aspects related to problem solving methodology are raised by these professors and, how technology is viewed, thought and used by them in their classrooms. A framework about investigating teacher s practice was used, based on Ponte (2002), Ferreira (2003), Fiorentini et al. (2004). A questionnaire was sent to professors of mathematics in Business Administration courses in order to verify their knowledge on works in this area; official documents from the Ministry of Education; National Exam reports from 1996 to 2003 and articles from national conferences were reviewed. Informal interviews took place at a private university in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The interviews followed Gaskell (2002) proposal for focal group, the purpose is to discuss and understand attitudes and beliefs from the participants in an informal environment. Data collection included researcher s log, audio taping and, transcriptions. Analysis followed Miles and Huberman (1984), Bolite Frant (2004), Rizzini, Castro and Sartor (1999). This research showed that professors were concerned with the specificity of Business Administration courses while working on the proposed content using problem solving methodology; technology was pointed as a facilitating teaching but professors should pay careful attention to class management. It will be important to establish study groups in the university to promote discussion and reflexion about professor s practice among professors of the same course |
