This dissertation is the result of research conducted about the acting of social workers in the Defensoria Pública do Estado de São Paulo – DPESP. Despite the constitutional provision of 1988, the DPESP was established only in 2006 after pressure from social movements. This public policy of full and free legal assistance has an important role to conduct the defense in court or out of court, of the rights of economically and culturally excluded population. The interdisciplinary care and legal advice work about human rights and citizenship to people and vulnerable communities are among the duties of Defensoria. The legal concept adopted is supported by the interdisciplinary perspective and advances regarding to doings of the judicial framework, this more restricted to the law field and their operators. The speech and the institutional responsibilities of DPESP are aligned to the principles of Social Work, providing a privileged space of action and identification of its professionals with the working potential. In this regard, we dedicated to study the inclusion of Social Work in the DPESP performing a historical review of the profession in the Brazilian Justice System, as well as highlighting the areas of activity and the profile of social workers in the Institution. It is noteworthy the Centros de Atendimento Multidisciplinar - CAMs and the construction of interbranch relations in Defensoria. We utilized a qualitative methodology, seeking through the voice of institution’s professionals, the understanding they have about the exercise of Social Work. The Social Work and the CAM, as a whole, leverage some of the DPESP differentials, because without the extrajudicial field and without the interdisciplinary approach the Defensoria would remain providing purely legal assistance. The vast political and social field of guarantee of rights, extrajudicially and interdisciplinarily, is configured as an important extension of the Institution's acting, summoning other knowledge to provide full legal assistance. It is in this context that is established the potential of Social Work in the Defensoria Pública do Estado de São Paulo
