This research aims at evaluating the material produced by Coordenadoria de Estudos e Normas Pedagógicas CENP (SEE-SP, 2002), an official organ that has the responsibility to offer pedagogical support for teachers in public schools among others. The material evalueted in this research is recommended to be used with students in public schools that operate on full time basis. The theoretical basis for this research was the official document Parâmetros Curriculares Nacionais de Língua Estrangeira (Brasil, 1998a), recomended as a reference for teachers. It is also based on reading conceptions by Goodman (1967), Rumelhart (1977), Nuttall (1982), Brown (1985), Kato 1985), Davies (1995), Kleiman (1996); Grabe and Stoller (2002); on the descriptions of language by Hutchinson and Waters (1987); Bloor and Bloor (1995); on the views descriptions of teaching and learning approaches to foreing language by Brown (1985), Mizukami (1985); Williams and Burden (1997); on considerations of materials writing by Cunningsworth (1984), Breen and Candlin (1987), Hutchinson and Waters (1987), Tomlinson (1998) and Graves (2000); evaluation criteria for materials by Ramos (in press) and evaluation criteria for reading comprehension by Dias (2006). The research was conducted in order to evaluate the activities and the pedagogical proposal in CENP material (SEE-SP, 2002). The analysis showed that, although the document makes statements about being in accordance with Parâmetros Curriculares Nacionais de Língua Estrangeira (Brasil, 1998a), it does not consider the orientation suggested in that official document in relation to language, teachinglearning approaches and the development of the citizenship awareness by the student, a component emphasized in the contemporary education views |
