This study aims to present the state of the art of the academic research conducted in Brazil from 1997 to 2021 associated with the teaching and learning of rational numbers in Basic Education, as well as in Mathematics and Pedagogy Degrees, mainly in order to reveal how materials and technologies are used in teaching, learning and teacher training processes. Thus, 199 surveys from the theses and dissertation bank of the Higher Education Personnel Improvement Coordination (CAPES) and the Brazilian Digital Library of Theses and Dissertation (BDTD) were analyzed. An electronic spreadsheet was created to compose the analysis and to organize information such as theme, objectives, research questions and type of privileged rational number representation in order to facilitate the pre-categorization and subsequent categorization of the research into thematic units. Based on the pre-categorization, five categories were created: Teaching and/or learning; Teaching knowledge and teacher training; Materials and technology; Official documents, textbooks and/or official tests; and History, Philosophy and/or Epistemology. A correlation was made between the works and the proposals contained in the National Common Curricular Base (BNCC), and the type of approach carried out. In order to answer the question “Based on investigations conducted involving rational numbers, what has Brazilian research carried out between 1997 and 2021 established in the field of materials and technology in regard to teaching and learning processes as well as teacher training?”. A descriptive and interpretative analysis of the 61 Material and technology researches was carried out. The results reveal that there are few works that relate teacher practice and student learning or that present a study of how fraction meanings are related and how it can be used in the classroom. In addition, there is a need to develop researches on rational numbers in the early years and in the training of teachers who teach Mathematics to rethink their training so that they are skilled both in the use of materials and technologies and in the mathematicians’ concepts, in order to qualitatively contribute to the teaching and real learning of rational numbers |
