This work has for object to investigate the place of the reader in the romance Memorial de Aires by Machado de Assis. Occur that the reader, in a first instance, it is not called for the interlocutor, having in view the diary s format, that is dominant the fictional author Aires s speech, and request just a paper like confident. The investigation was problematic, then, the function of the reader in a diary s genre that structures and supports the narrative, deriving from there three types of readers proposed by Memorial: the paper-reader, the witness-reader and the author-reader. The paper-reader is seen in the diary s intimate literature, defining content and support of a unique way, its role is an active way to question the author himself Aires. The other two interlocutors, the witness-reader and the author-reader show themselves in a conflict in relation to the diary s structure: The first one takes place of an observer and interprets the facts like the author himself; the second one turns the diary public, making it goes to a different way of it principal characteristic: keep it s author in you private space. When the author-reader shows himself, identifying as M de A. , fictional double of Machado de Assis. It is this reader-publisher that assumes, in the Warning, the choices and edition s narrative for the Memorial inspired by the notes left by Chancellor Aires. The results of this research show this text, by the point of view of the readers of the narrative has gained a new dimension that enriches the Memorial de Aires retrospective criticism |
