Resumo: This research project intends to analyze, in the light of the Communication Sciences, the figure of Pope Francisco and his relationship with the media, the image and the body, as well as the digital mediatization of the Vatican, from the creation of the Dicastery for Communication Holy See. It is intended to verify the presence of the Pope in several senses and uses: doctrinal teaching of the Catholic religion, clarification of current issues according to the gaze of Catholicism, among others. It is intended to verify how Francisco, religious leader of Catholicism, appropriates, above all, the communication apparatus in the search for new strategies of evangelization of the Church, based on his gestures and images as well as the daily life of his acts. The premise of the study arises because of the presence of the Church in the media, as a public field, is inserted in a crossroads of discourses that collaborate for the construction of "Catholicism". That is, constructed from the image and social representation. In the several spheres of the network, especially in online social networks such as Twitter and Instagram, users replicate the "universe of being Catholic". Thus, from day to day, the doctrine and tradition printed in the Pope messages are built and signified. That can provide the research with interesting shifts and changes, in which the communicational trajectory of the senses being an evidence contribution. From the Dicastery for Communication, it is intended to view the circulation of religious identities and practices, fomented from the messages of the Pope and also how the Holy See adequates or adequated its communicational and discursive apparatus to be present, especially in social networks. It is intended to verify in these social exchanges mediated by technology, what cultural practices of society, which also involve the religious phenomenon and institutions such as the Catholic Church, convert the Internet into a place and environment to foster religious practice and also reinforce doctrine and ritual practice. It will be sought to understand how the appropriation of social networks, convergence and interactivity from the work of the Vatican Dicastery and how mediation of doctrinal approximation takes place, making a new territory cleared by the Church for the construction of dialogue between institution and faithful, encompassed by a strategic communication change. The theoretical basis will have its contribution from the studies on Media Theory, Image and Culture of Norval Baitello Jr., Harry Pross, Dietmar Kamper and Villém-Flusser. This research will also rely on theoreticians such as La Porte, Puntel, Sbardelotto, Miklos and Bornhausen, regarding the relationship between Catholicism and communication. The scientific methodology will be based on bibliographical and field research, of a qualitative nature, aiming to construct a cartography of the pontifical messages by the communication vehicles of the Holy See. The novelty of this research is to be the first to approach, in an academic way, the gestures and images of Francisco that culminated in the creation of the Dicastery for Communication of the Vatican
