Resumo: The present work aims to study contemporary social relations and their impacts on the environment, analysed from three complementary theoretical assumptions. The query is: are global risks shaping our society into a new way of life? The first assumption situates and explains society at the moment called post-modernity. The second describes society based on the theory of world risk society. The third, more philosophical, is the moment of the cosmopolitan turn, presented in the theory of metamorphosis, as developed by Ulrich Beck. Emerging in global discussion of the last decades, the topics discussed associate the problem of human condition and development, as well as the world political-economic order, with the emergence of a highly complex risk society and, consequently, with the recognition of nature's fragility and vulnerability and human survival itself on Earth. Based on solid bibliographic research and practical examples, this study encourages the reader to question, from various angles, the advantages and limits of the risk society, always contrasting it with new theoretical possibilities. The objective, however, is not to offer interpretations or concrete answers about the social problems we face, but to enable and encourage — through their recognition — a critical reflection capable of contributing to a change in social habits that, now more than ever, apear to be necessary. In the end, the final considerations seek to list some theoretical possibilities arising from this research, unveiling deeper concerns, in order to allow or raise the debate and reflection on the directions we will decide to take as a global society
