Resumo: The objective of the work is to show how the shot of the dollar that occurred during the 2008 crisis has affected local businesses. Companies that were showing consistent results and expansion in recent years had to change the capacity to continue the operations and saw the ability to pay debts to deteriorate quickly and dramatically. So the main question of this study is how and why companies that had a less leveraged capital structure suffered more than others with the surge of the dollar. What is the reason why companies in the same sector delivered results as different as occurred with the SADIA and JBS? Does the capital structure adopted or the form of financing were crucial for healthy companies have financial problems? To answer these questions, we selected a list of publicly traded companies that have debts in foreign currency. From this list, companies were separated by sector, excluding financial sector companies. Finally a detailed analysis was made of leading economic and financial indicators and the company s capital structure. Interestingly, not necessarily companies that had a greater degree of leverage had worse results during the 2008 crisis. Negative results were more correlated to strategic decisions taken, such as improper use of derivatives, high exposure to volatile factors and currency mismatch between revenues and liabilities
