The Portuguese language, officially present in eight countries and spoken by over 270 million people, is celebrated at the Portuguese Language Museum, in São Paulo, the city with the largest number of Portuguese speakers in the world. What can be learned from the linguistic and literary manifestations of this community as a representative display on exhibition? Reorganised in an unused section of a building meant to be a train station in the busy metropolis, that still serves its purpose nowadays, the museum uses technology to materialize its collection, so as to make it equally interactive and dynamic, bringing on what is new and remembering what is old. Beyond the architectural value of the building (Called Estação da Luz), that deserves attention for its historicity and symbolism, the Portuguese Language Museum provides its audience with a sensitive, intelligible experience of language and culture, of Brazil, of a Portuguese-speaking community. The Portuguese language becomes museum material when it comes into the institution as a collection to be seen, without losing its functional dimension; the manner how it is displayed at the museum make it present, allowing the visitor to experience and reflect upon the several possible uses of the language proposed by this study practical, aesthetic, documental and rewritten. The purpose of this thesis is understand this museum as a contemporary phenomenon and how far language and subjects build an interactive, sensitive and meaningful experience together. We have noticed that this museum establishes relationships with the most traditional institutions, with the city around it and with the building that hosts it. We have also observed that the collection materializes a language through symbols, a language that is meant to be seen, heard, touched, tasted, experienced as the visit develops, and felt esthesically, aesthetically and cognitively. The theoretical framework consists of the discursive semiotics developed by A. J. Greimas, as signification theory, and its outspread in the socio-semiotics of E. Landowski as the theory of social interactions that build meaning regimes; and the plastic semiotics of J.-M. Floch and A. C. de Oliveira, as a visuality theory focused on the expression structures. The Portuguese Language Museum hosts, at a certain extension, social, political, economic, cultural and literary manifestations that reign and become real through the language, and circulate inside and outside the museum |
