Resumo: This thesis explores and tries to answer a common executive coaching question: Why does the executive suffers when he is not able to overcome his difficulties at work? This exploration is the result of a bibliographic research that studied the executive s professional identity in the context where prevails the impermanence and uncertainty of the globalization process and by the fear of being unsuccessful. The executive s professional identity is the result of decades of hard work and sacrifice and it is founded in his history of success, as well as on company s expectations for him of overcoming future obstacles and achieving the company s goals. The investigations were guided by the notion that identity is in constant metamorphosis. Based on this premise, the appearance of non-metamorphosis (metaphorically the sameness), is a symptom that there was a 'disconnection ' with 'one metamorphosis of the executive s identity. The difficulties at work can be expressions of this sameness. To overcome it requires a process of self-reflection that could allow the dissolution of the illusions (emancipation) that keeps this 'mismatch' and foresees fail in his professional activity, if not overcome his difficulties at work. The research pointed out that the coaching process is currently, among the Work Clinic s methods of intervention, the most appropriate to support the executive in overcoming his difficulties at work and suffering. This thesis final conclusion is that the suffering of the executive is due to the emergence of fear and anxiety due to the expectation that if no solution for his difficulties at work is found can cause termination of his professional identity, meaning he will become no one in life, nobody. The theoretical basis of this research lies mainly in Social Psychology and its central axis is the notion of the Sintagma (identity-metamorphosis-emancipation) of Ciampa (2005)
