Resumo: The purpose of the present work is to analyze and try to understand the meaning and the dimension of human dignity in historical, philosophical and juridical aspects of 1988 Constitution. Such investigation is due to the relevance that human dignity represents in the present historical context, especially to Law, since it is a major reference in juridical order in several contemporary nations. Human dignity is included in 1988 Brazilian Constitution as one of its most important aspects. However, we must see beyond the text to understand its importance, comprehension and effectiveness in order that it does not become just a decorative statement. It is known that the meaning and content of human dignity have been outlined for centuries and it has become especially relevant to Law from the twentieth century on, in response to cruelty and abuse suffered in the World War II when millions of souls were killed and the entire human race was threatened. Dignity is a priceless asset and cannot be traded; it is a natural gift to each human being. It cannot be seen as legal grant or privilege but it must be supported and protected by Law regardless race, faith, ideology, social status or any other differences there might be among people
