Resumo: the migration process was and remains a reality in Brazil, a country marked by great inequalities. The more developed regions have always been a focus of attraction for the inhabitants of less developed regions, what happened markedly between the Southeast and Northeast. In search of better living conditions, driven away by drought, in a political context that benefited from it, thousands of migrants from the region of Vitória da Conquista, Bahia in the southwest, this paper focuses on the migration to São Paulo in the 1950 s and the 1960 s, marked the withdrawal process, and when Brazil has undergone major economic changes, political and social. The method chosen for the research was qualitative, with interviews and obtaining oral histories of migrants aged over 60 years. There is a cultural value evident in all spheres of the paths they traveled. The reports show feelings of longing, passion, love for homeland and their loved ones, and the suffering that was always present in the lives of respondents. Migrants staged moments of exclusion and discrimination. The need for survival drove the trip to São Paulo, but the culture shock has marked their lives
