Resumo: Despite the profound social changes that have taken place over the last century, the manifestation of female sexuality remains a common concern in the offices of psychologists and psychoanalysts. Among female sexual difficulties, vaginismus is a condition in which a woman is unable to engage in vaginal penetration during sexual contact, even when she intends to do so. The objective of this research was to comprehend the psychic vicissitudes observed in women diagnosed with vaginismus at the researcher's office. The goal was to explore the psychogenesis and unconscious determinants of this dysfunction using a theoreticalpsychoanalytic approach. Hysteria was chosen as the psychic organization most closely associated with the women studied. A critical and contemporary perspective on hysteria did not hinder a profound exploration into the realm of this initial psychopathology addressed by psychoanalysis, which even a century after Freud's first writings, remains relevant. As a result, the clinical vignettes analyzed were categorized into three groups, each titled in relation to their issues: libidinal, narcissistic, and cultural
