The present thesis proposes to examine the development of relations between culture and society in Germany, between the establishment of the Berlin Secession (1898) and the tragic outcome of the Weimar Republic (1933), with the rise of Hitler and the German National Socialist Party (NSDAP). For this, the formation of German nationalism and ethos, in the context of German Unification (1871), and its development during the Empire (1871-1918), the First World War (1914-1918) and the republican period (1918-1933). The thesis focuses on the development of Modern Art, especially the Expressionist movement, and the contrast of modernist movements with the aesthetics of Romanticism. From this point we intend to understand the relations between social groups and municipal political parties and the receptivity of Modern Art through the acquisition of public collections in the period between 1898 and 1933
