Since the late 90s, the Portuguese versions of famous American musicals have been responsible for major blockbusters and the revelation of excellent interpreters of this genre show in Brazil. As a result, there was an increase in the number of courses to meet the demand for actors-singers and insertion of specific disciplines in the curriculum of Brazilian theater schools. PURPOSE: to characterize and analyze the sociodemographic profile and professional practices of vocal coaches for the musical theater actors in Brazil. METHODS: the study was conducted with 27 vocal coaches, 17 women and 10 men, working professionally in the country. Participants responded electronically, a questionnaire whose first section consisted of demographic data such as gender, age, training in singing, acting types, workplaces, cities and professional experience. The second section consisted of three open-ended questions. We chose to analyze the first question, which dealt with on the professional practices of the subjects studied, with regard to the techniques, exercises, guidelines and strategies, and the second, about their opinions regarding gender corner being taught to musical theater actors. In theme-category analysis of the first question were defined thematic techniques / exercises, orientations and strategies. These axes, systematic after reading the responses of the subjects were divided into categories. The data obtained from the responses to the second question were quantified. RESULTS: the demographic profile of the sample, 63% are women, 70.4% are aged between 21 and 40 years, 96.3% have training in classical singing, 40.7% work in private studios, 77.8 % work in São Paulo and 77.8% have professional experience between two and 11 years. In relation to professional practices of the studied group, the most cited in the thematic techniques / exercises were resonance and breath, in the thematic orientations, the category vocal health, and the shaft strategies were the most cited perception of voice and theoretical. In the opinion of 29.6% of the subjects, genres of singing to be taught to musical theater actors are lyrical and belting. FINAL CONSIDERATIONS: the demographic profile of the studied group was mostly female, aged between 21 and 40 years, trained in classical singing and time to practice between 2 and 11 years. As for the professional practices of these vocal coaches for the musical theater actors, the techniques and exercises they use most are related to resonance, breathing and glottal source; central guidance lies in vocal health, and their main strategies are voice perception and theoretical |
