Resumo: INTRODUCTION: The Staggered Spondaic Word (SSW) is a test used worldwide. Created by Katz in 1962, it was adapted into several languages. In Brazil there are two available versions that are based on interpreting and analyzing the performance of patients using the criteria of normality proposed for English language. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the performance of children from seven years old without associated complaints, determine the number of errors per condition, qualitatively and quantitatively characterize the findings and compare these findings with the original version. METHODS: We studied 51 children from seven years old in public schools in Jundiai city, in the state of São Paulo, without ontological complaints, no history of hearing loss and no learning difficulties. Audiological evaluation was performed and the two versions of the SSW test. The results were statistically analyzed according to the number of errors and the percentage of correct responses by condition, compared with values obtained by Katz (1962), Borges (1986) and Machado (1993) and the errors were qualitatively analyzed by descriptive analysis. RESULTS: There was a statistically significant difference between the two versions of SSW test when comparing the number of errors and the percentage of correct responses per condition, in all conditions the result of the SSW Machado was better than Borges´ version. As for the variable gender and laterality, no statistically significant changes were found. The qualitative analysis found numerous omissions mainly on Borges´ version. CONCLUSION: There is a statistical difference between the versions of SSW for seven years old children and based on these results we conclude that Machado´s version is the one closest to the results proposed by Katz in its original version
