The purpose of this paper is to conceptualize, investigate and elucidate the work of psychologists in a hospital organization. It aims at defining the roles performed by a psychologist as a health professional ina hospital institution, and knowing this psychologist, i.e., who this professional is. It also pursues to present some data for the Mental Health area, through the knowledge of the work of psychologists in benefit of the society. For such, based on a bibliographic survey and interviews with teacher·psychologists: with a sound ·experience in ·the area of Health Psychology, Hospital Psychology included, with psychologist effectively working in the Psychology Service in Public and Private Hospitals, the author. analyzes the work of the psychologist in hospital institution. This is characterized as an exploratory study, in an attempt to know the professsiona1, the labor market and the activity performed by this professional. 45 psychologists were interviewed. For.the quantitative analysis of the statements, 40 interviews with fema1e professionals were used, 30 of them working in PublicHospitals and 10 working in Private hospitals in the São Paulo City area. Three interviews were analyzed qualitatively because they were carried out with teacher psychologists and served as referential basis. Thi s paper leads to relevant conclusions in the area of Psychology. The psychologist, as a Health Professional, has a clinical, social, organizational and educational role in areas encompassing Preventive and Treatment Psychology. Through this study, it was also possible to find out that the active presence of the psychologist in hospitals is important, possible and necessary. He must be part of a general hospital staff. This way, he will be able to contribute to the hospital’ s humanization philosophy, He must have his own objectives and instruments, assist the patients and their families, the mul tiprofessional staff and other employees in the hospi ta1. The psychologist will also contribute to Education and Research. For all that, this profession demands its own management |
