Resumo: The Brazilian privatisation process has provoked deep changes in the electric energy distributors scenario. The regulator emerges with the role of promoting competition and a cultural repositioning toward market orientation. Besides, the residential customer satisfaction starts to be evaluated annually as one of the components that affect the tariff readjustment. This new context allows the use of relationship marketing strategies aiming to establish a positive relation with the regulator and the community trying to assure the business profitability and concession rights. A case study was conducted purposing to identify and analyze the relationship marketing strategic and tactic elements in the marketing efforts of a national distributor, the AES Eletropaulo, responsible for supplying energy for the São Paulo metropolitan area, seeking to improve the residential customer satisfaction. The main findings show that the regulator s customer satisfaction pool is a valid instrument for driving the AES Eletropaulo marketing actions. Moreover, although several relationship marketing elements were found, the evidences suggest that company leadership does not intend to implement a relationship marketing strategy. Thus, it can be inferred that the studied distributor is reacting to the new market rules, developing a marketing strategy to minimize the regulation negative impact in the financial results.
