Resumo: Due to an increase in the number of elderly people in Brazil, numerous strategies have been employed as a means to promote health to the older population, as well as prevent diseases related to aging. It is believed that education is the primary tool in achieving these goals. Therefore, by utilizing the text Active Aging: a policy framework as a reference point, this project aimed at identifying the social representation of a group of elderly women who underwent educational training regarding active aging and assessing their response to this methodological approach, in order to develop an actual educational program for the elderly for future use. This training was performed during 6 meetings, realized twice a week for 1 hour each day, which utilized the text Popular Education by Paulo Freire as the pedagogic theory. This text, by means of dialog and reflective thinking, is capable of transforming the teacher and the student. The group assessed in this study was composed of 10 elderly women, between 60 and 80 years of age, who were chosen randomly from a community exercise program offered by the City of Sorocaba. The data was obtained during individual interviews with the participants. Since this trial consists of a transversal, exploratory, and qualitative study, data was organized and analyzed according to the theoretical reference Discourse of the Collective Subject , based on the theory of social representation and analysis of content. It was concluded that the methodology utilized in this study was well accepted by the participants, who responded positively to the method and believed to have learned new information regarding ageing and exercising. New knowledge was constructed by exchanging ideas and experiences, and questions were answered during the interviews, which facilitated learning ability. They considered that this method favors networking and strengthens friendship bonds, and they also recommended that other people should participate in this approach, since it stimulates physical activity and promotes healthy habits
