This thesis intend to present a synthesis of the general theory of ideology in the works of the Franco-Algerian philosopher Louis Althusser. To do so, at first, four important texts were selected in which Althusser presents the main aspects of his formulation of the concept of ideology. Then, in the second chapter, we turn to the corrections and reiterations that the author made in later works. In chapter three, we gave a detailed exposition of his main theses on ideology. We conclude, in the fourth chapter, with an analysis of the mechanisms of functioning of the ideology
