Resumo: The study aims to investigate how four books of basic education have the concept of function. We seek to analyze the treatment of that object and try to identify the concerns of authors with their education. Of the four selected books, two of them were adopted in institutions where the researcher had taught, and the third was chosen to be older and present the content in question from the classical and the fourth to be newer and give a focus to the object function, unlike other three. For this analysis, we seek reasons in the theory of records of semiotic representation of Duval and content analysis of Bardin. Established indicators of analysis sought to identify how the authors of the books introduce the concept of function, based on records of representation. Of the four books under review in at least two, one can notice the influence of structuralist philosophy has enabled the group Bourbaki the establishment of mathematical structures. Such influence manifests itself in the concern of the authors to present as "prerequisite" of the concept of function, the themes: Cartesian product and binary relations. In the books reviewed is noted that the authors used the records: natural language, symbolic (algebraic and numeric), figural and graphics. Moreover, there is proposed exercises that provide the coordination of records
