Resumo: The main objective of this work is to analyze students performance on solving some SARESP\2005 s Algebraic questions which referred to equations and expressions involving the conversion of semiotic representation of nature language register to algebraic register (DUVAL, 2003). For this purpose, we used three of the SARESP\2005 s questions applied to the seventh grade of Elementary School students in 2008 as a searching tool. This work has a qualitative approach based on didactic engineer methodology (ARTIGUE, 1996). To analyze the results in students records, we based ourselves on Aline Robert s knowledge mobilization stages (1998). The tests were applied during two different moments: during the first, tests were reapplied in the same way as on SARESP\2005, i.e., using alternatives and, after fifteen days, in the second moment, we reapplied them but without alternatives. Analyzing our students performance it was noted that all of them are in a technical stage, solving questions using only operations with number instead of doing the conversion of nature language register to algebraic one. We believe that it is necessary to do an Algebra work including its several representations, on different stages of knowledge, which requires the students knowledge mobilization and the strategies articulation to solve some questions so that they can have a good understanding of algebraic concepts. Through this work, we expect to show that it would be better to do a qualitative analysis of students performance in internal evaluations from official bodies and from teachers, once it could be used to measure and implement new procedures and strategies capable of contributing to make the teaching and learning process in classroom better
