Resumo: |
The goal of this research is to identify the reasons for choosing the physical education program at the Federal University of São Paulo, using the concept of cultural capital proposed by Bourdieu (1998). For this purpose, it begins with the hypothesis that contact with cultural and corporal practices related to the universe of physical education within a familiar origin, and a social and educational background influence in choosing the physical education program. Moreover, within the same argument, the concept of classification, reclassification and disqualification (Bourdieu 1998) will be applied to study the strategy of the students in the social space. The data collection occurred in two phases. The first phase was made by applying a socioeconomic questionnaire to 40 students of the course to characterize them and investigate cultural capital. Out of these 40 students, 16 had joined the universal system and 8 the quota system. We will also study 16 graduates by the universal entrance exam. In the second phase, 10 interviews with students and graduates were made to ascertain the transmission mode of the cultural capital and its influence when choosing the physical education program. The analysis of the collected data indicate the existence of a relationship between the incorporation of cultural and corporal practices of the physical education built within a familiar origin, the cultural capital of arrival and the choice of the physical education program. The study also found that the choice of the physical education program at the Federal University of São Paulo by the students and graduates of the universal system as a strategy to reach a new social classification, and at the same time, to avoid a possible social disqualification of the capital previously inherited. On the other hand, for those entering the quota system, this strategy of accessing a higher level of public education seems to be supported in the search for a new social reclassification |
