Resumo: This study examines Paulo Freire’s thesis for the application to a professor position in the University of Recife, called Education and Brazilian Contemporaneity (1959), on education related to social and historical development in Brazil between 1959 and 1964. By understanding the dynamics in the aforementioned historical scenario, this work considers different aspects of the researched author’s educational background: the teaching career and his thesis; the researches on the industrialized subject; the researches on the national scenario; perspective of consciousness and Brazilian reality. The selected historical sources and results correspond to a set of historical perspectives and analysis of the book Education and Brazilian Contemporaneity (1959). The procedures used for analyzing such material are based on the studies of Antonio Gramsci, regarding the revaluation of the organic subject, the role of intellectuals and the economic issue, returning to Paulo Freire for the understanding of the new industrialized subject, in front of economic and social development, emphasizing the role of educational design for a critical and transitional perspective
