Resumo: This study has the work of the Social Worker as the central point and the political consequences of this professional work when moved by the current ethical-political project as its main object. The reference that serves to the analysis of the object found in Marx and in the Marxist tradition the explanatory foundations of social reality; and in Iamamoto, Netto, Yazbek, Raichelis, Mota, Behring and others the explanatory elements of the profession. To highlight the content of the current ethical-political project, reference is made to it in the professional legislation and in the political positions expressed by the leaders of the entities representing the profession and professionals. The methodological path of this research involves bibliographic research and analysis of empirical material. The presentation of the arguments developed is organized in three chapters. This study makes it clear that professional work moved by the current ethical-political project participates in the dispute between fundamental social classes in capitalist sociability, subtle participation, with modest consequences, within the limits of a profession, but that puts this work at the service of immediate and historical interests of the working-class, therefore consequences of a political scope and decisively different from those promoted by other professional work mobilized by another theoretical-methodological and ethical-political direction. In the small and immediate space of accomplishment, through each procedure that is peculiar to it, in the multifaceted concrete attendance situations, this work produces tension, confrontations and refusals with a counter-hegemonic meaning. But contradictorily, these consequences of a counter-hegemonic nature are aimed at affirming the guarantee of the various rights and their respective public policies, programs and services. Contradictorily, it is the dispute for the consolidation of a minimum citizenship standard (bourgeois) that this professional work moved by the current ethical-political project finds the place to support the interests of users, considered in their working-class conditions within the peculiar Brazilian capitalist societal ordering, dependent and peripheral, heir to our peculiar economic, political and social formation. This contradiction forbids any direct and instantaneous relationship between the political consequences of this work and the emancipatory content contained in the current ethical-political project. And, at the same time, it is this emancipatory content that is responsible for the counter-hegemonic dimension of tension, confrontations and refusals effectively performed by the professional work thus moved. This study concludes that professional work moved by the current ethical-political project can do a lot, but it cannot do everything. What was done with this study, was to put it in its possible place
