Resumo: This study was a qualitative and quantitative analysis of the Probability and statistics subjects of a sample of mathematics textbooks for secondary schools published from 1992 to 2005. The importance of this study stemmed from discussion of a curricular view in which the textbook is a fundamental resource for both students and teachers, who often take it as the basis for their teaching practices. Probability and statistics seem to be topics that do not receive in-depth coverage in secondary school textbooks, in spite of their applicability in students’ everyday life and of their easy association with other study subjects. Such perception defined the focus of this investigation and directed the analysis towards the concepts, properties and activities proposed for the study of probability and statistics in the textbooks under analysis. Results revealed that textbooks did not emphasize probability and statistics contents, and that some of them contained unclear concepts and poor content contextualization. Moreover, the possibilities of use of calculators and computers in the solution of problems was not explored in the textbooks analyzed, which goes against the Complementary Educational Guidelines established by the Brazilian National Curricular Parameters (Parâmetros Curriculares Nacionais – PCN+).
