Resumo: This paper aims to analyze the main characteristics of urbanization in Canoas / RS, from the 1930 and 1960. The research problem is linked to relations between the processes of (im) migration and metropolis in the formation of the town between the years 1929 and 1959. The period studied is characterized by a precipitous change in Canoas, which involved the projection of several possible futures for the city. Thus, this study takes into account the types of resort town, bedroom community and industrial city - usually attributed to Canoas - as active projects within the urban development of the city, not only as references narratives. The methodological approach of the study in question involved both qualitative and quantitative sources such as census data and statistical journals, urban plans, plant sand various administrative documents, originating from the Public and Private. The use of oral history as a research methodology provided information of interest to a construction of the development of the city of Canoas in the second half of the twentieth century from other possibilities, but those usually attributed to the city. The research finds its justification in the supply of historiographical gap concerning the study of metropolitan cities in Brazil.
