It has been five years, and the September 11th, 2001 attacks to the United States are still alive in the collective memory. The acts had a direct influence in the American citizens’ behavior and helped to enhance the doubts about the press and its freedom. Knowing the terror context, and that press freedom is essential to develop a democracy, this research brings the terrorism dilemma to people from Rio Grande do Sul. Interested in knowing the public opinion during threaten situations and comparing data from researches conducted in the United States, this study describes the press with a historical point of view. Facts that changed the press freedom during specific periods have been resumed, like democracy construction, development of authoritarian and totalitarian regimes, wars and terrorism.
