Resumo: This paper reports an investigation aimed to understand how a Learning Unit, based in Education by Research can contribute to meaningful learning about inorganic compounds in high school. The study was conducted with a group of students enrolled in first grade high school students in a private school education in Porto Alegre, RS. The Learning Unit was developed in 2011. The research was developed based on a qualitative approach: a case study. The instruments of data collection were questionnaires, to identify initials knowledge and subsequent development of the Learning Unit and notes held by the teacher throughout the activities. For analysis and interpretation of data used the Discoursive Textual Analysis proposed by Moraes and Galiazzi (2007). From the analysis it was perceived as the activities allowed the identification of changes in the initial knowledge of the subjects highlighted the complexity of his views on the final explanations of the study. This work provided that the teaching strategies developed in the research enabled the expansion of knowledge. It was noted the relevance of the approach of different methodologies in the classroom to an embodiment of the process of teaching and learning.
