Resumo: The capacity of the elderly to take a decision supported by his psychological-moral development is an essential constructor in the process of aging, which is related to his quality of life. The aim of this paper was to evaluate the capacity to take a decision and the quality of life in the elderly participating in groups of convivence in Erechim/RS. It was a transversal study in a sample of 670 elderly and a qualitative research in a group of 12 elderly, females and coordinators of these groups, age from 60 to 93, average of 70,4 years old and deviation of 7,3 years. Sample consisted of 88,7% females and only 11,3% males. 70,4% of the participants did not finish Elementary School and only 2,1% had finished College. Psychological-moral development of the participants was in the impulsive and autonomic level, with predominance of conformist level. The findings showed that most of the elderly has capacity to take a decision on his best interest. The six items of quality of life evaluated had all similar results. The qualitative evaluation identified the aspects that contribute to the quality of aging, and its meanings, in the perspective of the elderly, such as fair retirement, relationships as important social mediation, family, physical and mental health, liberty to manage their own life, spirituality, the necessity of governmental policies. Most of the participants showed characteristics proper to this stage of life and suggested measures which may increase their improvement.
