Resumo: The Bolsa Família program was created in 2003 by the Brazilian President Lula as a cash transfer program aiming to reduce poverty and hunger, following the United Nations Millennium Declaration. Poverty is multifaceted and should be seen and worked on differents ways to break its vicious cycle. The objective of this study is to investigate whether the inclusion of citizens in the Bolsa Familia program effectively contribute to combating poverty and increasing beneficiaries autonomy. Qualitative data were collected with 3 professionals and 4 beneficiary families and quantitative data were collected with 103 families of 7 Porto Alegre districts. The results show that the respondents perceive a significant improvement in the life situations of the families. Participation in group activities, meetings, among others, were significant related to life situation improvement perception of the families, emphasizing the importance of engagement for the autonomy and emancipation. Strengths and weaknesses of the Bolsa Família program are revealed so that should be strengthened or restructured to fully achieve their goals, combating poverty in its different forms and building a more egalitarian society.
