Resumo: The interest in developing a research focused on the needs and characteristics of senior consumer toward retail is due to the projected growing of this public in the next years, leading to a market of specific needs and very attractive to service companies considering it’s consumer potential (O’NEIL; FLANAGAN, 1998; IBGE, 2005). The ability of retail environment in attracting clients, improving the consumers presence at the stores and it’s profitability (SINHA; BANERJEE, 2004) reinforce the need to comprehend the wishes of senior individuals. In this context, this study focused on identifying the most suitable store environment to this market. To do so, it was necessary to analyze the behavior of the consumers of this specific segment on a buying situation, confronting their needs in relation to the store environment and its most appropriate characteristics to the senior consumers. Therefore deep interviews were made with third age consumers and with retail specialists to elaborate an environment configuration proposal that is adequate to this market. The results of this study demonstrate a deficit of apparel shops targeting this segment. The reatailer’s salesmen were pointed as a major element to the elderly retail environment, even to the elderly consumer, as to the retail specialists interwied, and it’s considered below theirs expectations, that searchs for gentle and voluntarly care. The retail’s layout and the atmosphere were also presented as very important features to this segment, because the retail needs to properly comunicate the segment to which it is dedicated to and it also must have specific sections to the elderly buyers, where they can identify themselves with the other buyers in age, dress style, consumer habits and social level. The results of this research analyze each one of the elements that compose the retail environment and allow to establish a proposal of the ideal format of this elements to the elderly market.
