Resumo: The present research aimed at verifying the level of morphosyntactic awareness and the mistakes found among sophomore Brazilian students, attending public high school in Porto Alegre, Brazil. Such an experiment focused on the usage of Simple Present Tense as part of the foreign language school regular syllabus. In order to carry out this goal, two activities were composed: the first one providing data for identifying the most frequent errors, and the second one verifying the students´ level of morphosyntactic awareness. Results point out that syntactical errors were predominantly found, indicating that there is a correlation between the level of morphosyntactic awareness and the errors. The greater the level of morphosyntactic awareness, the smaller the number of mistakes the student will supposedly make. The theoretical framework of connectionism guided the current research, enriching the studies about cognitive processes that take place while learning English as a foreign language, within the scope of a formal teaching situation.
