Resumo: The aim of this dissertation is the understanding of some meanings of the human relations with the material culture obtained from a specific study of two archaeological sites. These are located in the Rio dos Sinos valley, state of Rio Grande do Sul (Santo Antônio da Patrulha). The material culture was associated with the Guarani archaeological subtradition. This approach is based on the idea that the artifacts go through contexts of creation, communication and consumption. Chipped stone techniques and ceramic manufacture as well as creative acts and the consumption of artifacts within its spatial location in the areas of each site were studied. Artifacts are, therefore, thought as having an active relation with people and are full of meanings. This paper is seen as a contribution to the understanding of the occupation of the human groups associated to this subtradition in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.
