Resumo: | The apartment buildings on Independência Avenue and 24 de Outubro Street established a new, so-called modern mode of living for the elites of Porto Alegre in the 50s. The purpose of this thesis is to demonstrate that the development of Porto Alegre boroughs, especially from 1945 on, occurred according to ideals and architectonic principles in tune with local particularities but also sensitive to national and international trends. Cultural history and the study of the apartment buildings on the main avenues along the Independência/24 de Outubro arterial will be used to investigate the association between modernist architecture and the modes of living of the population in the Independência and Moinhos de Vento boroughs. The history of Porto Alegre can be understood as a function of the development of its boroughs and, particularly, of living standards in the modernist apartment buildings along one of its radial avenues, the Independência Avenue/24 de Outubro Street. |
