Resumo: | This study discusses the issue of unemployment. Its goal ís to contribute to the understandingof the way how unemployed workers who go the office of the National EmploymentSystem (Sistema Nacional de Emprego - SINE) in Porto Alegre cope with the situation of unemployment. Le. , how these persons experience unemployment and try to give a meaning to this experience, which includes their feelings, responses and attitudes. This is a qualitative research project that included 20 semi-structured interviews made with unemployed workers who looked for a job at the SINE office in July and August 2006. The analysis of the information gathered was done on the basis of the technique of Content Analysis developed by Bardin (1977). The category of work/labor was grounded on Marx's theory, which defines labor as the central activity in the process of humanization. In keeping with this choice, the study uses the dialectical-critical method, whose central categories are totality, historicity and contradiction. The changes that took place in the world of labor, particularly in the past decades, have caused a growing precariousness of working conditions and an increase of unemployment. This phenomenon entails significantconsequences for workers in several aspects of their lives, including their subjectivity. The findings of this investigation show that an idealized view of salaried jobs is predominant among the interviewed persons. Unemployment is a painful experience for them, since they feel humiliated and frustrated for being treated as useless and unproductive beings by society. The study confirms the fact that unemployment is affecting persons with ali levels of school education and that even persons with a higher levei of education are exposed to the consequences of this problem, which underlies the various forms of expression of the so-called"social issue."The topic challenges various areas of knowledge and urges them to engage in a dialogue on unemployment, making its effects visible and discussing possible strategiesto cope with it. |
