Resumo: This dissertation follows the rules proposed by the Postgraduate Program in Psychology at PUCRS and is divided in two studies. The first study is a literature review, Treatment Dropout in Psychoanalytical Psychotherapy: Searching for Definition, and aimed to: 1) dissert about the difficulty of defining treatment dropout among diverse psychotherapy approaches; 2) reflect about criteria used in distinct definitions found in national and international literature and 3) suggest a dropout definition for psychoanalytic psychotherapy. To identify the amount of studies about psychotherapy dropout, it was carried out a search in the standard computerized databases such as SCIELO, LILACS and PsycINFO. 2. 207 occurrences were found, possibly indicating the theme’s relevance. Therefore, research results aiming to understand the phenomena are contradictory and can hardly be generalize, because there are distinct definitions of “treatment dropout” used by the researchers. The definition proposed in this article seems to be an initial advancement to build an useful dropout definition for research and clinical practice. The second study, Predictors of Treatment Dropout in Children Psychoanalytical Psychotherapy, aimed to verify predictors of treatment dropout in children psychoanalytical psychotherapy. The results show that one socio-demographic characteristic (sex) and two clinical characteristics (source of derivation for psychotherapy and time of treatment) can predict dropout. Results are discussed regarding gender, treatment dropout and children psychotherapy literature. Some hypotheses are raised up to justify associations and nonassociations found in this study. Knowing psychotherapy dropouts predictors may allow therapists to prematurely identify patients pertaining to dropout risk group, giving them the opportunity to early work directly aspects of resistance and negative transference of these patients and their relatives.
