This dissertation discusses the work of art direction focusing on its contribution to the construction of the cinematographic character. It has as the corpus the presentation sequences of the characters Lígia, Kika and Wellington at the movie Mango yellow (Amarelo manga, Cláudio Assis, 2003, Brazil). It treats the participation of the art direction in the process of transposing the character - written and described – and its universe to the cinematographic image. It presents the art direction as the responsible for the conception of materiality needed to establish the visuality of the character and its environments. It also points to the importance of select and strategically relate the visual information contained in its work elements to provide indicative evidence that will help to reveal various aspects of the character.
