Resumo: The present work aims at knowing and analyzing the way family members are placed into the mechanisms of penal treatment. Based on the study of the complexity paradigm theoretical referential, the analysis condenses the dialogue and resource mechanisms present in the complex social system which the prison is. In order to meet such mechanisms, a study was developed at a prison institution in Porto Alegre. Besides the theoretical study concerning the relationship prisons and families, interviews were held with family members Who systematically visit the inmates, observations about the prison everyday life, specially on visiting days and the service provided for families. Another highlighted aspect is the perception of the technicians, based on theme groups, as a mean to access how the families are perceived and placed into the context of penal classification. The research provides a better view concerning the way these families live according to the stories which have been described and analyzed as well as a critical perception on the prison dynamic systems. Therefore, the study points out the different types of punishment directed to the families.
